RBR Units

RBR teams operate from seven research units. As well as having developed strong regional knowledge, their work involves many specialist subjects.


RBR at Askham Bryan
Located near York, RBR at Askham Bryan is a major research unit within this foremost land-based college. Our researchers work throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. RBR at Askham Bryan has particular expertise in the economics of pig production, contemporary environmental issues, and economic issues affecting the North York Moors. Askham Bryan is also a key provider of skills training in the land-based sector, having strong links to the farming industry in the region.

RBR at Cambridge
Researchers within RBR at Cambridge are based within the University's highly successful Department of Land Economy. Researchers work largely in the Eastern Counties of England. Land Economy at Cambridge is a leading international centre researching many contemporary problems affecting the environment and land use. RBR at Cambridge has particular expertise in the analysis of business data and making this accessible to both farmers and policy makers. Being based in the Eastern Counties, RBR at Cambridge is our leading unit for the analysis of crop production systems and data.

RBR at Duchy
Based in the Rural Business School, Duchy College, near Plymouth, RBR researchers work extensively across the South West of England. RBR at Duchy has particular knowledge in upland livestock production systems. The team's expertise in information technology underpins our efficient research work and delivery systems. Together with teaching colleagues at Duchy College, RBR at Duchy is also involved in a wide range of vocational training and academic courses - turning research into practical applications for farmers and other rural businesses.

RBR at Newcastle
RBR at Newcastle is based within the University's School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. With excellent links to one of the largest academic Schools of its kind in the UK, researchers within RBR at Newcastle work throughout Northern England, particularly covering Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. With extensive local agricultural knowledge of the upland areas of Northern England, the RBR at Newcastle team also have particular expertise in low-input farming and agri-environmental schemes.

RBR at Nottingham
Our RBR at Nottingham unit is based at the University's Sutton Bonington Campus, within the research-led School of Biosciences. Researchers work extensively throughout the East Midlands and areas of the West Midlands. The RBR at Nottingham research team have particular expertise in the economics of dairy farming, development of research methodologies for the Farm Business Survey, and research that models profitable farm-business strategies in response to changing market and policy conditions. RBR at Nottingham is also the lead RBR unit and is responsible for the management and administration of RBR research contracts.

RBR at Reading
RBR at Reading is based within the internationally acclaimed centre of Agricultural and Food Economics at The University of Reading. The RBR at Reading unit has particular expertise in the economics of horticulture and poultry production, in addition to the breadth of expertise borne from researching the contrasting farming systems found throughout Southern and Central England. The team has particular expertise in our organisation's operations management, playing a key role in our project delivery. Being based within the Department of Agricultural and Food Economics, RBR at Reading provide data and research input into a wide range of research projects examining aspects affecting land use, the rural economy and the food industry.
